Meet the Dachshund. Commonly known as the Sausage Dog or “Worsie”.

Dachshunds originated from Germany.

The standard size dachshund was developed to scent, chase, and flush out badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, while the miniature dachshund was bred to hunt smaller prey such as rabbits.

Their life expectancy is 12 – 16 years and normally weigh 7,3 – 15kg. Miniature Dachshund weighs about 4,5kg.

Characteristics

They are lively, stubborn, clever, devoted, playful and courageous pets.

The Dachshund is a short-legged, long-bodied, hound-type dog breed.

Coats

They comes in different coloures and types. They may be smooth-haired, wire-haired, or long-haired.

The typical colours are Red, Black & Tan, Chocolate, Dapple and Cream.

Eye Colour

Light-colored dachshunds can sport amber, light brown, or green eyes; however, kennel club standards state that the darker the eye color, the better. Dapple and double dapple dachshunds can have multi coloured “wall”eyes with fully blue, partially blue or patched irises due to the effect of the dapple gene on eye pigmentation expression.

The most common health conditions found in Dachshunds include: Intervertebral Disk Disease (back problems), Acanthosis Nigricans, Hyperthyroidism, various eye problems, injuries, obesity and skin problems.
