Why Large Breed Dogs Need Different Nutritional Support

From Boerboels to Labradors and German Shepherds, large breed dogs have unique nutritional needs that support healthy growth, mobility, energy, and long-term wellness.

At Complete Pet Nutrition, we’re passionate about supporting healthier, happier pets through balanced nutrition designed for real South African lifestyles.

Large Breed Dogs Grow Differently

Large breed puppies grow rapidly, especially during their first year of life. This fast growth places additional pressure on developing bones and joints, making balanced nutrition essential from an early age.

Nutrition that supports controlled, healthy growth can help large breed puppies develop properly without unnecessary strain caused by excessive weight gain.

Common Large Breeds in South Africa

Understanding the specific needs of active and larger dogs is an important part of supporting long-term pet wellness.

Why Joint Support Matters for Larger Dogs

Larger breeds carry more body weight, their joints often experience greater stress over time. Maintaining healthy weight and mobility becomes especially important as dogs mature.

Nutrients commonly associated with joint support may include:

  • omega fatty acids (helps to keep your dog moving comfortably)
  • glucosamine (protects joints from everyday wear and tear)
  • balanced protein levels (keeps muscles strong and supportive)

Nutrition for Energy and Wellness

Whether it’s a Labrador enjoying long beach walks in Durban or a Boerboel protecting a rural property, large breed dogs often require nutrition that supports energy, muscle maintenance, and recovery.

Large breed puppies have unique nutritional requirements, particularly when it comes to calcium and phosphorus. Unlike small breed puppies, they require carefully controlled calcium levels, typically between 0.8% and 1.5% on a dry matter basis, rather than receiving as much calcium as possible. During their slower, extended growth period, excessive calcium intake can disrupt normal skeletal development because young puppies are unable to regulate calcium absorption as effectively as adult dogs.

Maintaining the correct calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is equally important. The ideal ratio falls between 1.1:1 and 1.5:1, with calcium always slightly higher than phosphorus. An imbalance in these minerals can negatively affect bone growth and increase the risk of developmental orthopaedic conditions. This is one of the reasons veterinarians discourage supplementing complete and balanced large breed puppy diets with additional calcium or phosphorus unless specifically recommended for a medical reason.

Nutrition is only one part of the equation. Genetics, appropriate exercise, and overall body condition all play a significant role in healthy growth and development. While regular activity is important, excessive exercise, particularly long-distance running or repetitive high-impact activities, can place unnecessary stress on developing bones and joints before growth plates have fully closed. A useful guideline is to provide approximately five minutes of structured exercise per month of age, up to twice daily, while allowing plenty of opportunities for controlled play and rest.

This comprehensive approach to nutrition, exercise, and growth management helps large breed puppies develop strong bones, healthy joints, and the best possible foundation for adulthood.
