Every July, Mandela Day asks the same question: what are you doing to make things better for someone else? For our team, the answer has always been simple. Load up the vehicles, fill them with food, and go and see the shelters and rescues that look after South Africa’s animals every day of the year, not just this one.
This year we visited five organisations across the country, delivering a combined 1 538 kg of Complete dog and cat food. That’s a lot of full bowls, and a lot of tails wagging.
Where we went
The Cat Shack, Edenvale We dropped off 100 kg of cat and kitten food, along with a batch of bowls, toys and other accessories to keep the cats in their care comfortable and entertained.
Animals in Distress, Midrand This stop got the biggest delivery of the day: over 450 kg of dog, puppy, cat and kitten food, enough to keep the shelter’s kennels and cattery stocked for weeks.
Save-A-Pet Animal Shelter, Port Elizabeth 318 kg of dog and cat food went to the team at Save-A-Pet, who work around the clock to care for and rehome animals in the Eastern Cape.
Animal Anti-Cruelty League, Hammarsdale We handed over 400 kg of Complete dog food to the AACL branch in Hammarsdale, supporting their work protecting animals from cruelty and neglect.
Indelicate Pit Bull Rescue, Cape Town 270 kg of Complete dog food made its way to this Cape Town rescue, dedicated to giving pit bulls a second chance at a good home.
A word to the shelters
To the teams at The Cat Shack, Animals in Distress, Save-A-Pet, the AACL Hammarsdale branch, and Indelicate Pit Bull Rescue: thank you. Not just for the welcome on the day, though the wagging tails and purring hellos made the driving worth it. Thank you for what you do on all the other days too, the ones without a public holiday attached, when the food still has to go out and the animals still need looking after.
None of what we dropped off on Mandela Day would have made it to a bowl without the pet parents who buy Complete at their local store, week in and week out. That’s who this delivery really belongs to.
What's in the bag
South African pet owners have been buying Complete for more than two decades now, and in that time the priority has stayed the same: nutrition that works for the dog or cat in front of you, at a price that works for the household feeding them. The range runs from puppy and kitten formulas through to senior food, sized for everything from a toy breed to a Boerboel, and every bag is made to the same standard whether it’s feeding a family pet or a shelter dog waiting for one.
That standard is checked, not assumed. As members of the Pet Food Industry Association of Southern Africa, our food is put through regular regulation testing, which is one more reason pet shop owners and pet parents keep coming back to it.
